The state of California only accepts certain types of documents for identification purposes in regarding notarial services. A list is provided to you here.
State-Approved ID's document fall into two groups. Acceptable ID 's must be current or issued within the last five years.
ID Card or driver's license issued by the CA Dept. of Motor Vehicles
U.S Passport
Inmate ID card issued by the CA Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation (inmate in custody in prison only)
Any form of inmate ID by a sheriff's department (inmate in custody in a local detention facility only)
If any signer does not have one of the ID listed above, the notary may rely on any one of the following forms of identification, provided it is current or issued within the last 5 years. The four elements an ID must have are
Photograph
Physical description
Signature
Serial number
Passport issued by a foreign government
ID card or Driver's license issued by another U.S state
Driver's license issued by an authorized Canadian or Mexican public agency
U.S Military ID card (caution: some military ID's may lack all four required elements)
Employee ID card issued by an agency or office of the state of CA, or by an agency or office of CA city, county or city and county
Consular Identification documement (No Matricula Cards)
ID card issued by a federally recognized tribal government
A California notary cannot use personal knowledge to establish the identity of any signer. (Known to notary)
